AFTER SCHOOL SPOKEN ARTS WORKSHOPS
Self selecting students will participate in our After School Spoken Arts workshops that explore personal narratives, civic issues, and creative writing. These workshops can happen one-time or through a weekly program that can run for up 10-weeks. A certified Poet Facilitator will guide workshops to engage participants into an inspirational journey through writing, spoken word, and performance. Students will develop their voice, get comfortable with collaborative writing and sharpen critically thinking skills in a safe learning environment. By breaking gender, age, economic, ethnicity, religious and sexual preference boundaries, our workshops promotes diversity. After School Spoken Arts Workshops can be located in a classroom on school grounds or in a room at a community center. These workshops have happened in libraries, cafeterias, and outdoors, however they are most effective in a room with tables, chairs and a whiteboard. Since writing is a living art, we are able to adapt our workshops to different settings. It is our goal to facilitate an inspiring time to write, collaborate, and learn through spoken arts education.
Wednesday Writing Workshop
Since 2005, we have facilitated a FREE Wednesday Writing Workshop at the Arts at Marks Garage (1159 Nuuanu Ave) in Honolulu's historic Chinatown. The workshop is from 4:30pm-6:00pm and attracts students from all over the island. This is the longest running writing workshop on the island of Oahu. The workshop is a safe environment for writers and performers of all levels to develop their voice and their craft. Facilitated by a rotation of amazing local and international facilitators, these workshops encourage high-level critical conversations, push the aesthetic of spoken arts, and form a strong youth literary community. Students of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate.
Additional Workshops
We also facilitate multiple week workshops at University of Hawai'i, Manoa and Windward Community College for students in those areas to access our creative space.
